The Professional Pilot Leadership Initiative (PPLI) aims to accelerate the advancement of women in all pilot professions, facilitate dynamic mentoring, and enhance our leadership role in the aviation community.
As 99s, we know the value of community. Our organization was founded in the spirit of surrounding oneself with women pilots. For those new 99s, or women who are pursuing flying careers, the value of a community of women pilots, and professional women pilots, is undeniable.
Our community of pilots is constantly striving to learn more, and share what they've learned. Check out our library of webinars, and keep an eye out on the Straight and Level to learn about upcoming webinar events.

Next time you go flying, look down at the airport and the surrounding buildings. You may notice markings pointing to the airport and will probably see the airport name painted on the field.
This program of identifying airports to pilots was started as the National Air Marking Program. This program was the first U.S. government program conceived, planned and directed by a woman with an all-woman staff. The program was a part of the Bureau of Air Commerce.
In 1933, Phoebe F. Omlie was appointed Special Assistant for Air Intelligence of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics - NACA (forerunner of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration - NASA.) The following year Phoebe convinced the chief of the Airport Marking and Mapping Section of the Bureau of Air Commerce to institute a program where each state would participate and better identify its towns and cities from the air.

They come from a wide variety of backgrounds including students, teachers, doctors, airline pilots, business owners, professionals and air traffic controllers. Race Teams, consisting of at least two women pilots, must fly VFR during daylight hours only and are given four days to make flybys at each en route timing point and then land at the terminus. The race route changes each year, approximately 2,400 statute miles in length with 8 or 9 timing points.
The East Canada Section 99s organize the annual Gold Cup Air Rally (GCAR) is a weekend women’s cross-country competition flown in day VFR conditions. Rally challenges are based on questions related to the flight, identifying route landmarks from photos or by taking photos, calculations related to the flight, executing spot landings, scavenger hunts, or other surprises. All flights are VFR.
The Palms to Pines Air Race is organized by the 99s Los Angeles Chapter.
